Green grows up together with his quet neighbour Red. When the two hit the age of eleven, he becomes distant from his best friend and declares Red a rival because he's the same age and... height. Kid Green is hilarious like that. Some early media claims that he becomes a bully. But really this is only said rather than actually shown and I very much doubt that Green, who comes off as far more like a socially inept smug kid once one reads through all his dialogue, at this age can be considered actually toxic. At worst his dialogue is so petty it's funny and probably only provokes an eyeroll from Red.
RGBY happens and Red slowly but surely shows the snotty Green how it's really done. More and more determined, Green does make his way to the top and becomes champion. For what's probably just a few hours. Red defeats him and becomes champion for not only being a strong battler but also for cherishing and caring for his Pokemon, something Professor Oak says that Green failed at. But is Oak correct about this? There are some instances of official art where Green, even as a rather rude kid, does care for his Pokemon. This just makes Oak look like he's favouring Red. At least in Zensho there is a moment of Daisy proclaiming that what Oak says isn't true and that she genuinely sees the good in Green. And you know what's meaner than anything Green's done? Folks of Kanto mercilessly giving him the nickname Phantom Champion.
Let's Go seems to take place a little bit after RGBY. Green shows up, still with the attitude of the most obnoxiously radical and cool dude in town, but seems he's feeling better and is now also interested in being a mentor you can count on. He makes the big decision to run Viridian City's Gym. The future is bright!
